Bio
I see life as a complex story, with tender details, big dreams and meaningful moments; a little face covered in chocolate, a husband squeezing his new wife so tightly, you actually feel the embrace. I find beauty in the simplest of things and all ranges of emotion and am truly honored whenever welcomed into someone's story to document. I am being trusted to create your family's memories through imagery, and I take that job very seriously.
Along with the best equipment, I find the perfect elements in nature or within structures to create, and then wait for that ideal uncontrived interaction, capturing a bunch more spontaneously along the way. I am a experienced photographer who understands that sometimes "spontaneous" moments need to be planned or encouraged and have lots of tricks up my sleeve to make a baby smile or ease the nerves of a couple, so the result is natural, incorporating intimacy up close and entire situations shot as scenes. I also am happy to suggest the best poses and angles for the most flattering images. I love natural light if possible, it can be magical, and integrate lighting when needed.
A trained photojournalist, I received my Masters in Photography from New York University and the International Center of Photography, where I focused mainly on parent-child relationships. A helpless romantic, I am inspired by the photographer that many consider the father of photojournalism, Henri Cartier Bresson and other Parisian masters of the early 1900's, like Robert Doisneau and Edouard Boubat. I also adore the work of Sally Mann, Irving Penn, Diane Arbus, and Walker Evans,
After graduate school, I went on to photograph for the New York Post in 2004, where I had photos published almost every Sunday, along with 4 front covers. While working at the New York Post, I started my own Photography business in 2005. After the birth of my son, in late 2008, I left newspaper work to focus on Julie Stapen Photography full time. Since then I have been busy photographing many wonderful personal clients, taking reportage portraits of children and families, and shooting events (weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, milestone birthdays and more.) Corporate clients include, Time Warner, Save The Children, READ, US Weekly, Financo, LF USA, Berns Communications Group, The Myriad Restaurant Group, The New York Public Library, KA Design, eMap, The Jorge Posada Foundation, etc.
I am so incredibly lucky to do what I love. My goal is to tell the story of your life at that time, turning each captured moment into an image that will touch your heart for a lifetime, and in such a way that that moment is relived every time you view it.
